TPREL secures BESPA for 120 MWh project in Kerala

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power Limited, has secured its first battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA) from NHPC Limited.

The agreement includes a 30 MW/120 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) to be developed for the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited. The project was awarded under NHPC’s Tranche-I tender and will be located at a 220 kV substation in Kerala. It is part of NHPC’s initiative to develop 125 MW/500 MWh of BESS capacity in the state through tariff-based competitive bidding with viability gap funding support. The BESPA will be valid for 12 years, and the system is expected to be commissioned within 15 months. The project will help balance peak load, improve grid stability, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into Kerala’s power mix.
