Indian Railways (IR) is examining the alignment of the East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor Project (EWDFC). The Gati Shakti Directorate of the Railway Board (RB) is examining the project from a broader connectivity and development perspective, and IR is seeking inputs from stakeholders on industrial requirements. The project is currently at the planning stage.

The project involves construction of a 2,052 km long corridor between Dankuni in West Bengal and Surat in Gujarat, passing through the states of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra. The project was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. In February 2026, the RB directed Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to expedite the implementation of the project. In April 2026, DFCCIL commenced land acquisition for the project, while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was underway.
