Tata Power plans Rs 150 billion Mumbai grid upgrade to meet AI data centre demands

Tata Power is positioning itself to meet India’s growing artificial intelligence (AI) driven electricity infrastructure needs, reporting a data centre opportunity pipeline of more than 2.8 gigawatts (GW) across 18 domestic and global operators, alongside a Rs 150 billion plan to upgrade Mumbai’s power grid.

The company is pursuing 29 active work streams across renewable energy, transmission and distribution and integrated infrastructure. The data centre pipeline comprises approximately 430 megawatts (MW) of upcoming load under its distribution network, 1,236 MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity under active engagement. These segments reflect the different requirements of large data centre facilities, with distribution capacity supporting electricity delivery, transmission infrastructure enabling power movement through the grid and renewable energy opportunities addressing the sector’s growing energy needs.

Beyond electricity supply, Tata Power is seeking to offer solutions including powered land, grid connectivity, energy storage, cooling systems and utility infrastructure, targeting hyperscalers and large-scale data centre operators. Its presence across generation, transmission and distribution gives the company the ability to participate at multiple points in the data centre value chain.

Additionally, the pipeline represents potential business opportunities under engagement rather than a confirmed order book and conversion into executed projects will depend on customer commitments, project development and infrastructure readiness.
