The Central government has earmarked Rs 189.07 billion for constructing 26,474 km of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and other rural connectivity initiatives in 2026-27.
The initiative aims to connect remote areas and weak tribal group regions with all-weather roads, strengthening rural connectivity across the country. The programme also includes Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas under PMGSY and Amrut Navodaya Yojana schemes.
States have also been directed to expedite the completion of works in all remaining unconnected habitations under PMGSY-I and Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, with particular attention to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group habitations. Emphasis has also been laid on universal deployment of the Electronic Maintenance of Rural Roads under PMGSY (e-MARG) platform, enabling real-time monitoring of maintenance activities, performance assessment and payment tracking. Moreover, the wider adoption of the platform is expected to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in rural road maintenance.
