The Government of West Bengal inaugurated West Bengal Piped Water Supply Project (Purulia) on August 17, 2026.
The scope of the project involved construction of 3 conventional water treatment plant with the daily capacity of 6.35 million litres per day (mld), 4.42 mld and 4.01 mld, 459 horizontal/vertical river bed tube wells (RBTWs) as sub surface water intake, 112 nos overhead reservoir of capacity 150 cubic m to 750 cubic m with 20 m height staging, raw water/clear water main and distribution pipelines, procurement and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment for relevant water supply schemes, development of supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) and geographic information system (GIS) and project management information system (MIS).
The project is expected to provide safe piped drinking water to more than 84,500 rural households across Manbazar-I, Barabazar, Arsha, Purulia-I and Puncha development blocks, and will also supply water to Purulia Municipality.
It has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs 12,962.5 million and has been funded by Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA).
