The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) signed a subsidiary finance agreement for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), Phase III on July 9, 2020. The MUTP is being implemented by the MRVC, a JV of the Ministry of Railways and the Maharashtra government, and comprises a number of railway projects. It aims at improving the suburban network on a macro scale. Phase III of the project includes construction of a suburban railway
corridor between Panvel and Karjat, new suburban corridor link between Airoli and Kalva (elevated) in the Central Railway zone and quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu link in the Western Railway zone, amongst other works.
