India notifies standards for cloud computing, data centres and AI ethics

India has notified standards for cloud computing, data centre performance and the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time. The move aligns the country’s digital infrastructure with frameworks developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

According to a government notification dated February 25, 2026, the standards establish common definitions for cloud systems, introduce performance metrics for data centres and incorporate ethical considerations into the design of artificial intelligence systems. The step formalises the technical and governance framework supporting India’s expanding AI ecosystem.

The standards have been notified under sub rule (1) of Rule 15 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Rules, 2018.
