The Karnataka Transport Department will soon install AI-based surveillance cameras on major highways in the state, beginning with seven strategic places in and around Bengaluru, as part of a significant effort to decrease traffic violations and accidents.
Using state-of-the-art technology, a Rs 0.70 billion initiative will be undertaken in three stages with a goal of improving road safety.
The cameras with AI capabilities will be connected to a command centre that will automatically create e-challans for violators and track violations in real-time.
Installing cameras along busy roads and accident-prone areas, such as Ramanagara on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, Srirangapatna, Bengaluru Airport Road, Attibele, Hosapete, the Parle-G factory intersection on Tumakuru Road, and Nelamangala, will be the main goal of the first phase.
The subsequent stages will use traffic and priority data to extend coverage to more districts. The department intends to install the AI cameras in 20 locations during the second phase.
Karnataka has had an alarming 192,685 traffic accidents in the last five years, underscoring the urgent need for improved enforcement and monitoring systems.
It is anticipated that the deployment of AI-powered cameras will improve traffic flow on state highways and serve as a deterrent to careless driving. All commuters will travel on safer roads owing to this programme, which is backed by automation and real-time data processing.
