Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is planning to construct 17 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) having a combined capacity of 583 million litres per day (mld) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
This initiative aims to augment wastewater treatment and reuse in Bengaluru. At present, BWSSB has a pipeline network spanning around 12,000 km. It supplies around 2,250 mld of water to the city of which about 85 per cent is released as wastewater from households. The existing 33 STPs treat approximately 1,200 mld of wastewater while an additional 800 mld requires treatment. The new STPs are likely to narrow this gap in treatment. Moreover, there are plans to develop a pipeline network to supply treated water for industrial purposes.
The estimated cost of the STPs is around Rs 24,000 million.
