BBMP proposes Rs 80.43 billion tunnel road project to alleviate traffic congestion

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is advancing plans to construct an 18 km tunnel road, connecting Hebbal Esteem Mall Junction to Central Silk Board Junction, at an estimated cost of Rs 80.43 billion. This project, pegged at Rs 4.46 billion per km, aims to mitigate the escalating traffic congestion along the north-south corridor of Bengaluru.

A Turkish consultancy firm has completed and submitted the feasibility report for the project. Based on this report, a tender for the construction will be floated shortly. The proposed tunnel, located 20 to 45 m underground, will run parallel to the metro rail route and feature three lanes on each side, with provisions for double-decker roads. Designed for travel speeds of 35-40 km/h, the tunnel will include five entry and exit points which include Hebbal Esteem Mall Junction, Aramane Road, Golf Course Road, Jayanagar Ashoka Pillar, and Silk Board Junction. The construction will use tunnel boring machines, similar to those used for the east-west corridor metro rail tunnel.
