Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) has developed and patented an on-site wastewater treatment technology called NOWA. It is a sustainable technology that would treat organic wastewater generated by hotels, restaurants, catering units, and similar establishments. It has the benefit of recovering quality treated wastewater and bio-energy, organic manure and soil conditioner from the wastewater. It also requires lesser space, incurs lesser operational cost and capacity for treating high quality wastewater without problems from frequent sludge disposal as compared to other technologies like moving bed biofilm reactor, sequence bioreactor, electrocoagulation, etc.
