Indian Railways (IR) sanctioned the Mararikulam-Alappuzha Rail Line Doubling Project on June 8, 2026, which has been approved under the umbrella work for doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover and bypass works. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 2.2 billion.
It is likely to facilitate movement of nine additional passenger trains in each direction per day along with freight transportation of 2.88 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Presently, it is the only remaining single-line stretch on the Ernakulam-Turavur-Alappuzha-Ambalapuzha-Kayankulam corridor, where other doubling works have already been commissioned or are under implementation.
The project involves doubling of 10.65 km long Mararikulam-Alappuzha rail line in the Southern Railway (SR) zone at an estimated cost of Rs 2.2 billion in Kerala. It has been identified under Mission 3000 MT and the High Density Traffic Network Corridor of IR.
