The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved the redevelopment of berth no. 9 at New Mangalore Port to enhance liquid bulk cargo handling and improve maritime efficiency. The project will be implemented on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis under the design build finance operate transfer (DBFOT) model.
The redevelopment involves replacing ageing infrastructure with modern facilities capable of handling crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied petroleum gas. The berth depth will be increased from 10.5 metres to 14 metres, with future expansion up to 19.8 metres, enabling the port to accommodate large vessels including very large gas carriers.
With an estimated cost of Rs 4.38 billion, the project will have a capacity of 10.90 million tonnes per annum and include advanced mechanisation and safety systems. It is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen India’s maritime trade.
