Tunnel boring machine (TBM) S-639B has achieved breakthrough at the Kanpur Central station for package KNPCC-06 under the Kanpur Metro Rail Phase I Project. It was commissioned at Transport Nagar station in January 2025 and travelled till Kanpur Central via Jhakarkati.
The package KNPCC-06 involves design and construction of a tunnel through TBM, cut and cover tunnel, underground ramp from Kanpur Central end of Nayaganj station to elevated ramp after Transport Nagar and three underground metro stations viz. Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti and Transport Nagar including architectural finishes, electrical and mechanical, tunnel ventilation system, etc. on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Naubasta via Jhakarkati bus terminal corridor (corridor 1). The joint venture of Afcons Infrastructure Limited and Sam India Builtwell Private Limited was awarded the contract for the same.
The Kanpur Metro Phase I Project involves the development of a 33 km long metro rail at an investment of Rs 110.76 billion.
