Rs 90 billion allocated in Delhi’s state budget for FY 2025-26 for water and sanitation infrastructure 

The government of Delhi has allocated Rs 90 billion for drinking water, sanitation, rainwater conservation and other water-related infrastructure in its state budget for FY 2025-26. This aims to bridge the gap of 290 million gallons per day (mgd) between the water demand (1,290 mgd) and the installed capacity (1,000 mgd).

Rs 5 billion have been earmarked for the construction of 40 decentralised sewage treatment plants to ensure cleaning of Yamuna river through the treatment of sewage at the source itself. Further, Rs 2.5 billion has been allocated for the replacement of old sewer lines and improvement of the water treatment plants, each. The projects involving the tapping of drains will be carried out for Rs 2.5 billion while Rs 2 billion have been allocated for the conversion and interception of the Najafgarh Drain. Additionally, Rs 2 billion will be utilised to lay pipelines in place of open canals from Haryana to prevent water loss and increase efficiency.

Also, Rs 1.5 billion has been allocated to undertake automation, intelligent metering, and supervisory control and data acquisition system to strengthen the water management in Delhi, and for an emergency water storage, each. Rs 1 billion is allocated for installing borewells or ranney wells and Rs 500 million for the rejuvenation of water bodies in Delhi. Furthermore, Rs 500 million will be spent on rainwater harvesting works. Alongside, a mobile application called DJB Tanker is likely to be launched, enabling efficient monitoring of water tankers.
