The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to invest over Rs 150 billion in new highway projects across Uttar Pradesh to enhance cargo and passenger movement. Several districts, including Kanpur, Bareilly, Barabanki, Bahraich, Agra, Aligarh and Gorakhpur, are expected to benefit from upcoming and under-construction projects. Additionally, the upcoming Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is expected to resolve traffic congestion between the twin cities. It is set to be completed by July 2025. The 594 km Ganga Expressway, with an estimated cost of over Rs 360 billion and developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), is expected to be operational by March-April 2025. Once completed, Uttar Pradesh will have nine access-controlled expressways, including the 91 km Gorakhpur Link Expressway, with the state’s expressway network exceeding 1,900 km, accounting for 47 per cent of India’s total expressway length. The state government is also improving rural road connectivity to facilitate the transport of farm and dairy produce, benefitting districts such as Kanpur, Bareilly, Barabanki, Agra, Aligarh and Gorakhpur. Several detailed project reports are ready, with others progressing through the bidding stages.
