With over 29 years of experience at public sector giant Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Ajay Sharma is currently the general manager for power distribution. In his current role, his responsibilities include spearheading the power facility of a 2.5 million tonne integrated steel plant of SAIL-IISCO at Burnpur in West Bengal. This facility is one of India’s oldest.
His priorities include ensuring uninterrupted, reliable power supply to all production units at the integrated steel plant through proactive, preventive maintenance and network connectivity optimisation.
He shares that his most memorable assignment was his involvement in the stabilisation of the plant, where he worked with his team on the design and commissioning of the entire power system network.
He adds that equipment availability of the project has also steadily improved, from less than 80 per cent to over 99.23 per cent, in the past year through improved network management. This has enabled him and his team to make the 220 kV and 33 kV systems nearly “breakdown-free”, he notes with satisfaction. While the system has improved significantly with increased system reliability, more investments are planned for new facilities.
On the power sector as a whole, he notes that the key challenge is the lack of connectivity with end users and the need for further in-depth penetration of the distribution networks. In addition, the revamping of old infrastructure, high-power reeling and sustainability are other challenges that require attention. However, he adds that renewable energy will help in improving infrastructure for better connectivity.
His management style follows the phrase “foreseeing the unforeseen”. This includes anticipating possible problems and taking proactive preventive measures before serious issues can occur. Their system notifies them of abnormal conditions in their machinery which helps pre-empt breakdowns.
He strongly believes in being a team player and ensures that everyone in his team is recognised for their hard work, from the director-in-charge to the non-executive and contractual workers. Further, to boost morale among his employees, he has established various sports activities and courts, including an outdoor field for football, cricket and volleyball, and an indoor room for table tennis
