Second international airport being planned for Bengaluru

Plans are currently underway for the development of a second international airport for Bengaluru, Karnataka. The new airport is estimated to have a land requirement of around 4,500-5,000 acres. It is planned to be as large as the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, with a passenger handling capacity of at least 100 million.

Various factors are to be considered before suggesting a location for the second airport including the need to be in closer proximity to industrial hubs. Reportedly, Kanakapura Road, Mysuru Road, Magadi, Doddaballapura, Dabaspet, and Tumakuru are some of the probable sites for the new airport.

The KIA has been the third busiest airport in the country. It is predicted to reach the peak passenger and cargo load capacity by 2035, hence bringing about plans for a second airport.
