The central government has allocated Rs 2,650 billion for Indian Railways (IR) under the Union Budget 2024-25. Of the total outlay, Rs 2,520 billion will be provided by the central government as gross budgetary support, while Rs 30 billion will be generated through the internal resources of IR and Rs 100 billion through external sources. Of the total, Rs 360.91 billion has been allocated for construction of new lines, Rs 300 billion for doubling, Rs 45.33 billion for gauge conversion, Rs 65 billion for electrification, Rs 410.86 billion for rolling stock and Rs 44.91 billion for signalling and telecommunication. Further, the government will implement three major economic corridors, namely, energy, mineral and cement corridors; port connectivity corridors; and high-traffic-density corridors. IR is also planning to convert 40,000 normal rail bogies to Vande Bharat standards to enhance the safety, convenience and comfort of passengers.
