During April-May 2021, major Indian ports handled 121.98 mt of traffic, compared to 92.95 mt in the corresponding period of 2020-21, registering an increase of 31.23 per cent. Port-wise, Deendayal port handled the maximum traffic 22.80 mt, followed by Paradip port (20.51 mt) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) (12.51 mt). The traffic handled at major ports has been severely impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, major ports have been registering a contraction in the extent of year-on-year cargo decline since July 2020, suggesting a recovery in the country’s external trade.
