The central government has inaugurated a Rs 60 billion propylene derivative petrochemical project at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Kochi refinery. The project will help generate 500,000 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of propylene. This is expected to save Rs 40 billion in foreign exchange. With this, BPCL is strategically entering the petrochemical sector to reduce the dependence of the country on petrochemical imports, which are used to produce a wide range of articles such as paints, printing inks, automotive parts, diapers, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
