Indian major ports register decline of 12.43 per cent in traffic during April-October 2020

During April-October 2020, Indian major ports handled 354.82 mt of traffic, as compared to 405.2 mt in the corresponding period of 2019, registering a decline of 12.43 per cent. Deendayal port handled the maximum traffic at 62.93 mt, followed by Paradip port (61.97 mt) and Visakhapatnam port (38.81 mt). The traffic handled at major ports has been severely impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In terms of growth, all major ports registered a decline except for Mormugao port, which handled 10.18 mt during April-October 2020, an increase of 16.47 per cent over the previous fiscal year. The ports that witnessed the maximum decline are Kamarajar (30.56 per cent), Cochin (22.31 per cent), Chennai (21.7 per cent), Mumbai (19.65 per cent) and JNPT (18.02 per cent).
