The Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (Units 3 and 4) in Gujarat comprises the biggest indigenously developed variant of the pressurised heavy water reactors. The third unit of the project achieved “first criticality” in July 2020, marking a landmark event in India’s domestic civilian nuclear programme. It is the country’s first 700 MWe unit. Plans for the project were approved in April 2007, construction approval was confirmed in 2007, and in late 2009, finance for the project was approved. The two units are expected to be commissioned by September-October 2021.
