The central government has laid the foundation stone for several road projects in Jammu & Kashmir. These are the Zojila tunnel, the Jammu Ring Road and the Srinagar Ring Road. The first project, to be developed at a total cost of Rs 68 billion, involves the construction of a 14.31 km two-lane, bidirectional tunnel with a parallel escape (egress) tunnel between Baltal and Minamarg on the Srinagar-Leh section of NH-1A. The second project entails the construction of the 58.25 km, four-lane Jammu Ring Road connecting Jagati in western Jammu to Raya Morh. Estimated to cost Rs 20.24 billion, it also includes the construction of eight bridges, six flyovers, two tunnels and four viaducts on the route. The third project entails the construction of the 42.1 km, four-laned Srinagar Ring Road connecting Galandar in West Srinagar to Sumbal, and is expected to cost Rs 18.6 billion. It also includes the construction of a major bridge, three flyovers, 23 tunnels and two viaducts on the route.
