MoRTH mulls signing of MoU with South Korea for road information system

The MoRTH is exploring an agreement with South Korea for the introduction of a highways information system in the country. This would be developed along the lines of the system run by the Express Highways Information Corporation of South Korea, with integrated monitoring of highways at a centralised control room. Meanwhile, the MoRTH has launched a scheme for setting up driver training centres for providing quality training to commercial vehicle drivers, improving road and environmental safety and strengthening overall mobility on roads. Around 789 road accident black spots have been identified on national highways, of which 139 black spots have already been rectified while work on 233 black spots has been awarded and is in progress. Earlier, the MoRTH had also issued guidelines for taking up road safety audits on national highways as a part of all new projects. In the past two years, detailed road safety audits for national highways spanning 610 km have been sanctioned while installation of crash barriers at accident-prone locations on national highways in hilly regions have been sanctioned for 183 km at a cost of Rs 1.08 billion.
