AAI allocates funds of about Rs 34 billion for up-gradation of airports in Northeast

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has allocated funds to the tune of Rs 34 billion for the upgradation of airports in the north-eastern region of India. Of the total funds, Rs 17.2 billion has been allocated for Assam. These funds will be utilised for the construction of a new integrated terminal building and air traffic control (ATC)-cum-technical block, and the strengthening of the existing runway at Guwahati airport. Terminal buildings will also be constructed at the Silchar and Jorhat airports. Further, in Dibrugarh, an aircraft hangar and an ATC- cum-technical block will be constructed. For Tripura, funds amounting to Rs 5.25 billion have been kept for constructing a new integrated airport at Agartala. An allocation of Rs 8 billion has been made for an integrated terminal building at Imphal airport, Manipur. With funds worth Rs 0.42 billion, the expansion of the existing terminal building will be undertaken at Dimapur, Nagaland. For Arunachal Pradesh, funds amounting to Rs 2.11 billion have been granted for upgrading the Tezu, Kailashahar and Kamalapur airports. In Meghalaya, some of the funds will be utilised for installing an instrument landing system at Shillong airport and for the development of Tura airport. AAI will develop a greenfield airport at Pakyong in Sikkim. So far, projects worth Rs 9.34 billion have been completed and the remaining are expected to be completed in the next two to three years.
