The union cabinet has approved the launch of the PM-Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (WANI) initiative to promote growth of public Wi-Fi networks in the country. Under the approved proposal floated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), public Wi-Fi networks will be set up by public data office aggregators to provide public Wi-Fi services through public data offices (PDOs). As per the government, there will be no licence fee or registration required for opening such PDOs.
