The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved guidelines for the injection of compressed biogas (CBG) into the natural gas pipelines (NGPL) and city gas distribution (CGD) networks.
The guidelines cover areas including CBG quality analysers, calibration practices, safety instrumentation, etc. These include design and technical standards aligned with technical standards and specifications, CBG quality and specifications, installation procedures for CBG injection facilities, operational, monitoring, and maintenance practices and safety requirements, including odorisation and control systems.
The guidelines mark a notable step in operationalising grid-based evacuation of CBG and addressing a critical gap in the CBG ecosystem. The provision of a clear, transparent and standardised framework also facilitates stakeholders for developing infrastructure by project developers, CGD entities, technology providers and investors. It is also expected to enhance project viability through assured market access, support financing and infrastructure planning, and accelerate the scale-up of CBG production across the country.
