Tunnel boring machine Noyyal achieves breakthrough under Chennai Metro Rail Phase II Project

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) Noyyal achieved breakthrough at Mandaveli station for package TU-02 under the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II Project on February 7, 2026. It was commissioned at Greenways station in September 2023 and travelled for 763 metres till Mandaveli.

Package TU-02 involves construction of approximately 12 km long twin bored tunnels from Kellys station to Taramani Road Junction and construction of diaphragm walls, entry/exit structures of Chetpet station, Royapettah Government Hospital station, Thiruvanmiyur station, and part diaphragm wall of Greenways Road station, including launching and retrieval shafts. Larsen and Toubro Limited was awarded for the package in May 2021.

Besides, TBM Eagle achieved a breakthrough at Thirumayilai shaft for package UG-01 under the same project on February 9, 2026. It was commissioned at Lighthouse station in January 2024 and travelled for 1,981 metres till Thirumayilai.

Package UG-01 involves construction of underground stations at Light House, Kutchery Road, Alwarpet, Bharathidasan Road including underground stabling yard and cross over at Light House station and associated twin tunnel from chainage 0.001 km to 5.15 km (down line). ITD Cementation India Limited was awarded contract for the same.

Phase II of the project involves development of 118.9-km three metro corridors (Corridor III, IV and V) in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu. It is mostly underground with elevated section confined to few short stretches and consists of 128 stations in total.
