The Tamil Nadu government has sought funds worth Rs 53.98 billion from the central government for the implementation of various water supply projects in Tamil Nadu. The proposed projects include the development of a 100 million litre per day (mld) capacity desalination plant and a connected pipeline to the Villupuram and Tindivanam municipalities and the Marakkanam and Vikkaravandi town panchayats at an estimated cost of Rs 20 billion. The state is facing an acute water shortage especially in the capital city of Chennai where water tankers have been deployed to manage the situation.
