Chennai Port has surpassed monthly traffic of 5.045 million metric tonnes (mmt) in August 2024, for the first time in 10 years.
Besides, the port handled 170,606 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container traffic in August 2024, as compared to the previous best of 153,948 TEUs handled in October 2021.
Additionally, on August 31, 2024, the port set an all-time record by discharging 23,534 tonnes of imported steel cargo in a single day from the vessel M.V. Bunun Youth at West Quay III, surpassing the previous record of 20,100 tonnes unloaded from M.V. NAGUAL on November 7, 2023.
