The National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) Port-Maduravoyal expressway corridor project worth Rs 58.85 billion has been stalled as the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TN WRD) has directed the authority to stop the ongoing Cooum river work. This is due to the dumping of rubble into the river to create access for rig machinery.
The case is currently underway before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Additionally, the NHAI has agreed to cover the full cost of implementing flood response recommendations and restore the river to its original width to compensate for the space occupied by the pillars.
