CR workshops convert ICF coaches to automobile carriers and ARTs

CR workshops at Matunga and Parel are working towards converting ageing Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches into automobile carriers and accident relief trains (ARTs). The coaches that are being converted have a residual life of five years. Once converted, they will have a total life of 25 years. According to CR, in the April-September period of 2023-24, 57 ICF coaches were converted into New Modified Goods-High Speed automobile carriers and four ICF coaches were converted into ARTs. The prototype conversion of ICF coaches into automobile carriers has been attributed to an increase in load, while the introduction of additional ARTs is meant to help in emergency situations such as accidents. During the April-September period of 2023-24, CR transported 74,318 automobiles, against 57,431 during the corresponding period last year.
