Kerala government grants in principle approval for Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod RRTS Project

Government of Kerala (GoK) has granted in principle approval for the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Project. The project involves development of a regional rail network spanning 583 km from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod in Kerala. The project is likely to be developed in four phases.

Phase I involves 284 km Travancore Line from Thiruvananthapuram to Thrissur, along with the Thiruvananthapuram Metro and integration with Kochi Metro, with work to commence in 2027 and completed by 2033. The Phase II will extend from Thrissur to Kozhikode along the Malabar Line, alongside the Kozhikode Metro. The Phase III will connect Kozhikode to Kannur, and the final phase from Kannur to Kasaragod.

The funding for the project is likely to come from Central Government (20 percent), Government of Kerala (20 per cent) and the remaining 60 per cent from funding agencies.
