The state government of Odisha has made a major decision to construct at least 35 important corridors throughout Odisha, totaling more than 6,100 km, by 2036 in order to modernise the state’s road infrastructure in line with the anticipated expansion in traffic and the goals for economic development.
Connectivity is a key priority under Viksit Odisha by 2036, and the government has developed a comprehensive strategy to completely enhance and expand the road network over the next ten years. In addition to 1,500 km of last-mile and first-mile feeder roads, this network consists of 2,700 km of non-national highways (NH), 2,800 km of NH arterial roads, and 600 km of inter-corridor links.
Access-controlled roadways is another focus area, which would also enhance connectivity to areas of social significance, production hubs, and centers of economic activity. By building ring roads and bypasses in all towns with a population of 0.1 million or more, it will also aid in the decongestion of urban regions.
The proposal to establish the Odisha State Highway Authority (OSHA), which will be tasked with creating and carrying out the master plan, has already received approval from the state cabinet. OSHA will be given sufficient authority by the government to expedite the work.
The provision of Rs 750 billion under the road infrastructure category for the next five years will most likely cover the specified corridors, even though the fund estimate for the identified corridors is yet to be made.
