Eco-friendly German technology being adopted in Kasaragod, Kerala for road renovation

Eight major roads in Kasaragod, Kerala are being revamped using eco-friendly German full-depth reclamation (FDR) technology under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). This innovative method recycles existing road materials, reducing new resource consumption while ensuring durable, low-maintenance roads with minimal environmental impact.

The Chaiyom-Kanhirapoil road of Rs 350 million cost is the first to be upgraded, covering a 4 km stretch with a 5.50 m width. Advanced machinery excavates the road to a 30 cm depth, blending the material with stabilising compounds like cement and lime. After a seven-day reinforcement process, a layer of bituminous tar is applied for enhanced durability.

The initiative is co-funded by the state and central governments, contributing 40 per cent and 60 per cent, respectively. Other roads under renovation include Cheruvathur-Valiyapoyil and Miyapadavu-Daigoli. Authorities anticipate project completion within four months, marking a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure development.
