India constructs 40,000 km of rural roads using plastic waste for sustainable highways

India has constructed nearly 40,000 km of rural roads using plastic waste under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, with 13,000 km completed in the past two years. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made it mandatory to use plastic waste in highway construction, repurposing 8 million tonnes of garbage for national highways, including the New Delhi-Mumbai corridor.

This initiative offers significant environmental and economic benefits by reducing pollution and generating employment. In addition, MoRTH is working with Indian Oil and other firms on projects to convert waste into bio-compressed natural gas (CNG), further advancing sustainable infrastructure development.
