Various water supply projects in Guwahati are likely to be completed by December 2025.
These projects include the North and South-Central Guwahati Water Supply project which involves the construction of water supply facilities in the South Central and North Zones of Guwahati city to achieve continuous (24 X 7) pressurised potable water supply with 100 per cent coverage of the citizens within the project area. It also involves the construction of 2 jackwell-type intake, 2 conventional water treatment plants (WTP) of 200 million litres per day (mld) and 40 mld capacity each, 7 storage reservoirs, about 40 km transmission mains and around 1,000 km distribution mains.
Further, the South Guwahati West Water Supply project covers areas in the western part of Guwahati from Bharalumukh to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport which would include Bharalumukh, Santipur, Maligaon, Pandu and Jalukbari. The source of water is the Brahmaputra river. The project involves construction of a raw water abstraction intake point at West Kamakhya area, a WTP with a capacity of 107 mld at Sadilapur near Saraighat bridge and a pump house.
Besides, Guwahati Water Supply project (South East) involves the construction of a river intake, 98 mld WTP (including site filling and river protection works), pumping mains and service reservoirs, 450 km of distribution pipelines and installation of consumer water meters. It will cover a population of over 500,000 by year 2030 and over 800,000 by year 2045.
