India plans a dedicated two-wheeler lane on highways and urban roads

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is developing a comprehensive strategy to introduce dedicated lanes for two-wheelers on state highways and urban roads to improve road safety. This initiative includes constructing pedestrian foot-over bridges (FOBs) or underpasses on major urban arterial roads. The plan aims to address traffic non-segregation, a significant cause of road accidents in India.

Inspired by Malaysia’s successful implementation of dedicated two-wheeler corridors, the proposed strategies include integrating road safety modules into school curriculums and holding annual road safety workshops. The goal is a 70 per cent reduction in accidents and fatalities per 10,000 vehicles and a 50 per cent reduction per 10,000 km of road length.
