Indian major ports handled 819.23 million tonnes (mt) of cargo during FY 2024, an increase of 4.45 per cent year-on-year (YoY), as per Indian Ports Association. The major ports handled 784.31 mt of cargo during FY 2023. This increase in cargo traffic was driven by rising iron ore exports and coking coal imports. Port-wise, Paradip Port reported the highest cargo traffic at 145.4 mt, an increase of 8 per cent YoY. Meanwhile, Mormugao Port witnessed the highest increase in traffic in percentage terms, by about 19 per cent to 21 million in FY 2024. Commodity-wise petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) has the maximum share i.e. 30.03 per cent, followed by container (22.16 per cent), thermal coal (15.51 per cent), other miscellaneous cargo (11.00 per cent), coking coal (7.92 per cent), iron ore (7.45 per cent), among others.
