Central government clears eight hydropower projects in Ladakh

The central government has cleared eight hydropower projects aggregating 144 MW on the Indus river and its tributaries in Ladakh. These are the Durbuk Shyok (19 MW), Shankoo (18.5 MW), Nimu Chilling (24 MW), Rongdo (12 MW) and Ratan Nag (10.5 MW) hydropower projects in Leh, and Mangdum Sangra (19 MW), Kargil Hunderman (25 MW) and Tamasha (12 MW) in Kargil. The design of these projects has been certified as compliant with the Indus Waters Treaty by the Central Water Commission. The information has also been provided to Pakistan as per the provisions of the treaty. So far, only two major projects have been constructed on the Indus river – Chutak (44 MW) and Nimoo Bazgo (45 MW).
