Southern Railway (SR) has managed to save Rs 549.9 million by harnessing alternative sources of energy. It has saved Rs 64.5 million by generating 16.3 MUs of solar power from 2017 till July 2022. Solar power panels have been installed at various locations across the region and SR is working towards increasing the capacity of the solar plants. SR had harnessed 91.56 MUs till July 2022 through wind power plants in Tuticorin, resulting in savings of Rs 485.4 million.
