The Maharashtra government has planned two dams, Gargai and Pinjal, to meet the increase in Mumbai’s water demand to 5,940 mld by 2041. The Pinjal dam project, to be constructed in Palghar on the Pinjal river, aims to provide 865 mld of water to Mumbai city by 2026. However, the MCGM is rethinking its proposal to construct the Pinjal dam in Palghar district. Instead, it is focusing on recycling wastewater to reduce the pressure on freshwater sources. According to the MCGM, the construction of the Pinjal dam requires a number of environmental clearances and agreements with project-affected people. The civic body will take a final decision on the same after considering these factors to check for its viability.
