Key trends shaping airport development and operations
Airport development and operations in India are being shaped by rapid traffic growth, large-scale capacity expansion and the emergence of airports as integrated aviation hubs. Airports are increasingly leveraging digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), biometrics and real-time analytics to improve operational efficiency, security and passenger experience. Sustainability is also becoming a key priority, with investments in renewable energy, carbon reduction, electric mobility and climate-resilient infrastructure. At the same time, enhanced multimodal connectivity, cargo infrastructure and regional airport development are strengthening India’s aviation ecosystem and supporting long-term economic growth.
Major milestones achieved by Delhi airport
Delhi airport handled 78.7 million passengers and over 1.14 million metric tonnes of cargo. DIAL expanded connectivity to 162 destinations, the highest among Indian airports, and added several new domestic and international routes. The airport also operationalised the entire Terminal 1 (T1) in FY 2026 and converted T3 Pier C from domestic to international, achieving a capacity of 105 million passengers per annum. Further, the airport enhanced its airside capacity from 1,522 to 1,700 air traffic movements.

Technology interventions
Technology has become a critical enabler of airport operations, allowing airports to manage increasing passenger volumes while ensuring efficiency, security and seamless travel experiences.
At Delhi airport, we have deployed several technology-led initiatives to improve passenger convenience and operational performance. The DigiYatra platform, which uses biometric facial recognition technology, enables a completely contactless passenger journey from entry to boarding, resulting in faster processing, enhanced security and reduced congestion.
We have also introduced self-baggage drop facilities, with 14 machines, including 12 fully automated units capable of processing luggage for up to three passengers per minute. This significantly reduces waiting times and provides travellers with greater flexibility and convenience.
To further improve passenger movement, Delhi airport has implemented XOVIS, an AI-powered queue and passenger flow management system that enables real-time monitoring and optimisation of passenger traffic. Additionally, initiatives such as Food @ Gate and self-ordering kiosks enhance customer convenience by allowing passengers to order food digitally and receive deliveries directly at their boarding gates.
Collectively, these interventions are helping Delhi airport deliver a faster, safer and more seamless travel experience while improving operational efficiency.
Sustainability initiatives at the airport
Sustainability is at the heart of Delhi airport’s long-term growth strategy. We achieved the landmark distinction of becoming a net zero emission airport in 2025, five years ahead of our target, through a comprehensive approach spanning energy, transportation, water, waste management and climate resilience.
A key milestone has been the operationalisation of the Eastern Cross Taxiway (ECT), which has reduced aircraft taxiing time, improved runway efficiency, enhanced passenger experience and delivered significant fuel savings. The ECT is expected to cut approximately 55,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to planting around 1.5 million trees.
On the energy front, Delhi airport now operates on 100 per cent renewable energy. This is supported by a 7.84 MW solar power plant within the airport premises and additional renewable power sourced through open access arrangements, helping eliminate nearly 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
We have also accelerated the transition to cleaner mobility, with almost 100 per cent of DIAL-owned vehicles now being electric, supporting our vision of making Delhi airport a green transportation hub. Additionally, the use of TaxiBots is helping reduce aircraft fuel consumption and emissions during taxiing operations.
Water stewardship remains a key priority. Delhi airport has recently been certified as a water-positive airport. It operates a 16.6 million litres per day zero-liquid discharge sewage treatment plant, enabling the reuse of treated water for landscaping, flushing and cooling systems. We also have more than 650 operational rainwater harvesting structures.
Our waste management strategy is built on the 3R principle: reuse, recycle and recover. Supported by an integrated solid waste management facility comprising a material recovery facility, biogas plant and grass pelletisation unit, these efforts are helping us move towards our “zero waste to landfill” goal.
Sustainability is equally embedded in our infrastructure development. T3 has achieved LEED Gold and IGBC Platinum certifications, while the expanded T1 has received LEED Platinum pre-certification. We continue to strengthen climate resilience through risk assessments, adaptation planning and climate action initiatives.
Looking ahead, we are actively preparing for the future of aviation, including assessing infrastructure requirements for sustainable aviation fuels and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and environmental management systems. Our focus remains on ensuring that Delhi airport continues to set global benchmarks in sustainability, innovation and operational excellence.
Opportunities and challenges for airport operators
Airport operators have a significant opportunity to capitalise on India’s rapidly growing aviation market, rising international connectivity, expanding airline fleets and the emergence of Indian airports as global transit hubs. Advances in digital technologies, AI-driven operations, biometrics and data analytics will further enable airports to enhance capacity, efficiency and passenger experience without proportionate infrastructure expansion.
Key challenges for Indian airport operators include maintaining capacity ahead of demand, managing airspace and infrastructure constraints, the need for significant capital investments to support future growth, and regulatory uncertainty around tariffs and airport economics. Rapid digitalisation introduces cybersecurity and operational resilience risks, while sustainability requirements and climate-related disruptions will require substantial investments in green infrastructure. Additionally, attracting skilled talent and managing increasingly complex airport ecosystems will be critical to maintaining efficiency and service quality over the next decade.
Looking ahead
Our key priorities for 2026-27 include unlocking additional international capacity, accelerating hub development at Delhi airport, and driving operational excellence across the airport ecosystem. We will leverage digital technologies and data-driven decision-making through initiatives such as the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Program, DigiYatra, the Airport Predictive Operations Centre and the unified total airport management system to improve efficiency, predictability and stakeholder coordination. At the same time, we will continue enhancing passenger experience, sustainability outcomes and infrastructure readiness to support long-term growth.
