The central government has accorded Maharatna status to Powergrid, thereby giving it greater operational and financial autonomy. The Maharatna status provides enhanced powers to Powergrid’s board for facilitating the expansion of operations, both in domestic as well as global markets. As of September 2019, Powergrid’s transmission network includes over 160,930 circuit km of transmission lines, 248 substations with a transformation capacity of over 383,270 MVA on a consolidated basis.
