TN government sanctions funds worth Rs 11.47 billion to upgrade rural roads in the state

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned funds worth Rs 11.47 billion to upgrade rural roads in the state. The upgrade comes under the category of “other district roads” which include six-lane/intermediate lane stretches that connect major industries, agricultural marketing centres, tourism centres, religious places, taluk headquarters and other significant routes in the neighbourhood. The state government has been implementing road upgradation programmes for other district roads in a piecemeal manner every year since 2015. It has identified about 2,596 panchayat union roads and panchayat roads spanning 7,965 km for upgradation. The administrative sanction of Rs 11.47 billion has been granted for upgradation of road stretches spanning 1,267.9 km under Phase I of the programme for 2019-20 and road stretches spanning 434.93 km under Phase II of the programme.
