With over three decades of experience in India’s power and gas sector, Rajesh Kumar Mediratta is a recognised expert in energy markets, and a pioneer who has contributed significantly to the development of power and gas exchanges.
A gold medallist in mechanical engineering with an MBA in finance, he began his career with the Central Electricity Authority under the Indian Engineering Services and contributed significantly to critical power infrastructure reforms at Power Grid Corporation of India and Western Regional Electricity Power Committee. He was a founding member of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and Indian Gas Exchange (IGX).
He initiated the development of IEX in 2007 and the creation of IGX in 2019. He is currently driving IGX’s strategic expansion into clean fuels, including biogas and compressed biogas (CBG).
His focus includes building market frameworks that support the aggregation, certification and delivery of CBG, and integrating producers and consumers onto a common digital platform. These efforts align with India’s broader push towards sustainable and low-carbon energy solutions.
He is known for fostering an inclusive leadership culture that encourages innovation, collaboration and customer-centric thinking, empowering employees’ focus on learning and development.
His approach combines a clear strategic vision with operational autonomy for teams, enabling agile execution and long-term value creation.
Mediratta actively engages with international energy markets. Under his leadership, IGX has signed collaborative agreements such as MoUs with Central European Gas Hub, EEX and GIZ aimed at enhancing knowledge exchange and global best practices.
His long-term mission is to strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure while advancing investor confidence, market maturity and energy security.
His daily routine reflects the same discipline and vision that define his leadership, beginning with early morning walks, gym sessions, pranayama and meditation. This structured start to the day brings clarity and focus to his decision-making.
Outside of work, he enjoys travelling across India and abroad, using these experiences to stay attuned to global energy dynamics. He closely monitors developments in international power and gas markets across all regions, and draws insights from mature markets for the Indian market.
