The Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, has commissioned a first-of-its-kind removable solar panel system installed between railway tracks. The pilot project has been rolled out at BLW’s workshop line number 19, with an indigenously designed installation procedure for laying solar panels between the rails. The project spans 70 metres of track and is equipped with 28 solar panels, delivering a combined output of 15 kWp. The panels are mounted directly on concrete sleepers using epoxy adhesive and cushioned with rubber pads to endure the vibrations of passing trains. Additionally, the removable design ensures easy maintenance and operational flexibility without disrupting train movement. Reportedly, Indian Railways (IR) could generate approximately 321,000 kWh annually per kilometre by implementing this model across its network, while also avoiding land acquisition costs by utilising idle space between tracks.
