Following the installation of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, India is now implementing green hydrogen fuel infrastructure along national highways. In line with this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will begin a Rs 6 billion pilot project on ten specific highway segments to test fuelling and repair facilities for hydrogen-powered vehicles as part of the government’s energy security effort. The pilot will eventually be expanded to all national highways.
In addition to establishing guidelines for fuelling stations and storage systems, it will assess whether an adequate supply of green hydrogen can be assured for commercial cars. Before the program is implemented state-wide, the trials, which will be carried out in several locations, will evaluate not only the technological and supply-chain viability but also the logistical and geographic difficulties.
In order to build hydrogen storage and fuelling stations along certain routes, the government is negotiating with state-run refiners Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).
