Inland Waterways Authority of India Board approves major inland waterways projects and clears regulatory amendment

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) Board has approved a comprehensive development plan for National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra) in Assam, including fairway and terminal upgrades, navigation aids, etc. The IWAI has also cleared a proposal to develop a link road connecting the upcoming ship repair facility to inland water terminal (IWT) at Pandu. Projects worth over Rs 15 billion are also underway in the Northeast region.

The Board has also approved amendments to the IWAI waterway classification regulations, 2022. The distance between the navigation channel and the outer edge of a jetty have been rationalised.

Additionally, the IWAI has engaged National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts, Indian Institute of Technology Madras to prepare a detailed project report for extending NW-64 (River Mahanadi) from Sambalpur barrage in Odisha to Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
